  • Sergio Martinez To Face Martin Murray In April

One of the greatest fighters of this era, Sergio Martinez, is set to make his comeback in his home country of Argentina against Martin Murray. Sergio Martinez has repeatedly clamored for a fight against Floyd Mayweather, but other than that Martinez has nothing else to prove in the sport of boxing. A truly gifted fighter, Martinez also has a commitment to helping others, so he cuts a noble and heroic figure – rare in the sport of boxing.

Sergio Martinez has said that he only has a handful of fights left before retirement. I just hope that one of those fights is against Floyd Mayweather or even Canelo, although I highly doubt either will happen.

  • Naazim Richardson Will Be In Sergio Martinez’s Corner

Respected boxing trainer Naazim Richardson has been asked by the Sergio Martinez team to be in their corner BoxingScene.com reports. They want to make absolutely sure that Chavez Jr has legal hand-wraps.

Naazim was the man who finally caught Antonio Margarito’s hand-wraps, which had been going on for who knows how long. Naazim, singlehandedly, may have won Shane Mosley this fight with his heightened vigilance. Since then, he has become the go-to man to make sure fights are fought on equal levels. Miguel Cotto asked Naazim to be in his corner when he fought Margarito the second time.

I think this shows just how deadly serious Sergio Martinez and his team are taking this fight. Despite all of Sergio’s marvelous achievement, if he loses this fight, this is what he will be remembered for forever. The stakes are high.

  • Julio Cesar Chavez Jr And Sergio Martinez Face Off On HBO

One of my personal favorite fighters, Sergio Martinez, will be fighting the surging Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on September 15. Sergio Martinez is an unlikely champion, an Argentinean ex-patriate who became a pound-for-pound great in his thirties.

This fight is perhaps the only boxing match I’m excited about in many months. Below is a good, and understated, face-off between the two fighters. Sergio is usually noted for his gentleman-like demeanor, but Julio Cesar Chavez Jr seems to inspire the trash-talker in him.

It’s interesting to note that Martinez says both Kelly Pavlik and Paul Williams are better fighters than Chavez Jr.

While I hope and think Martinez will win, I don’t see him knocking our an iron-chinned Chavez Jr. I can’t wait for this fight!

  • Sergio Martinez vs Paul Williams Full Fight – This Is A Modern Boxing Classic!

At the time, Sergio Martinez and Paul Williams were both criminally under-appreciated middleweights, unable to secure the big paydays on par with their prodigious boxing skills. Sergio Martinez would eventually go on to be considered a pound-for-pound great and Paul Williams is now recovering from a horrific motorcycle accident.

This fight made me a big fan of BOTH fighters, both true champions inside and outside the ring.

  • Sergio Martinez, King of the Middleweights, Will Now Battle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr September 15th

Sergio Martinez, the un-official king of the middleweights will now officially battle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr September 15th in a really exciting fight.

Martinez has been heckling young Chavez Jr for years for a fight ever since Martinez got wrongly stripped and the title was basically handed over to Chavez Jr. If Chavez Jr wins then Sergio should personally crown him, like he crowned himself after knocking out Paul Williams!

Realistically, though, this match-up has turned out to be a lot more interesting than I had previously anticipated. Sergio Martinez is personally one of my favorite boxers, and I consider him one of the top three best boxers in the world. I love his swagger and beautiful, technical style. He’s an Argentinean that fights with the slick, African-American style that is really fun to watch. He has great movement, loads of stamina, and an under-rated chin.

If this fight had even happened a year ago, I would say that Martinez easily beats Chavez Jr. But, now, I think this match is much closer than it would’ve been in the past. Chavez Jr. is a very big middleweight, is still undefeated, and looked very good in his last stoppage win over Andy Lee. It will be very hard for Martinez to win a decision over Chavez Jr, who is boxing royalty, and I don’t know if he can stop Chavez Jr. One of Chavez’s strong points is his physicality, bodying his opponents around the ring, and he has a very good chin.

I, personally, am very excited about this fight. While I believe that Martinez will win this fight, because he is clearly the better boxer, Chavez Jr has a good chance of pulling off the upset.

  • Sergio Martinez Says Fight Between Him and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr For September Almost Confirmed

By now, it seems like Sergio Martinez has been calling out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr since the beginning of time. The fight between Sergio and Julio has become somewhat apocryphal in the sense that it’s talked about but never seems to materialize like the Pacquaio/Mayweather fight.

With an upcoming fight between Andy Lee And Chavez Jr seeming to be close to being signed for June, Sergio Martinez has surprisingly appeared on a radio show and said that his fight with Chavez Jr is “completely confirmed.” The video is posted below as the source, although I will admit I don’t speak Spanish, so can’t fully confirm it. The reason I believe the fight is finally being made, is because of the recent dispute between Bob Arum and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Alex Ariza, Manny Pacquaio’s strength-and-conditioning coach, as well as Chavez Jr’s coach, said that Arum threatened to sideline Chavez Jr if he didn’t sign the contract extension. Due to this dispute, the relationship between Arum and Chavez Jr is shaky, according to a recent interview Ariza did with fighthype.com.

Therefore, Arum is ok with throwing Chavez Jr to the “wolves” so-to-speak and letting the fight between Sergio and Chavez Jr come to fruition. It appears that Chavez Jr wants to prove himself, and it was Bob Arum that was holding back the fight from happening.

I, personally, would love to see this fight, and I definitely hope it happens! While Sergio used to be the clear favorite, with Sergio’s recent lackluster performance against Matthew Macklin and Chavez Jr’s pedigree, youth, and size-advantage this fight is becoming more and more competitive!

    Here is some translation:

Martinez: “They tell me it’s completely confirmed. The only thing that’s left is to sign the contract which I’ll be doing soon. They tell me it’s all done. Just the official confirmation is needed…It’s going to be in September 15 in the MGM Grand. My training camp will begin in July 15th”

  • Andre Ward Wants to Fight Sergio Martinez, Not Lucian Bute

Andre Ward has made it very clear that he’s not interested in fighting Lucian Bute, until Bute beats someone like Carl Froch in May. However, he was watching the Sergio Martinez/Matthew Macklin fight very closely, even doing play-by-play on his twitter account.

He says that he’s ready to face Martinez next, but the interest seems to be one-sided, as Martinez seems very hesitant to fight men bigger than himself, preferring to call out smaller men. Andre Ward is reportedly starting to figure out who his next opponent will be. He seems very keen on Martinez, but word is that Martinez is getting ready to sign a fight with Andy Lee.

  • Sergio Martinez Is So Desperate to Fight Floyd Mayweather, He’s Offering an 80/20 Split

These are desperate time for Sergio Martinez. The 37-year old boxer, often referred to as a man without a country, is freaking out over getting a big-money fight before his time runs out. He’s been fighting a string of unknown European fighters since his devastating knockout of Paul Williams. Despite his recent win over Matthew Macklin, he knows he needs to clinch that pay-per-view fight within the next year.

Manny Pacquaio will never fight him, so Sergio Martinez has been angling for either Floyd Mayweather or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. He even put out a desperate plea on a Spanish television show, pleading with Miguel Cotto to fight him. While it has been reported that talks will now begin for a fight with Chavez Jr. in September, Martinez seems to have his heart set on fighting Mayweather, who he believes for some reason will fight him. Openly critical of Pacquaio, Martinez has only had words of praise for Mayweather, who he thinks is the best fighter in the world.

Martinez is, in fact, so desperate to fight Floyd, that he has offered a ridiculous 80/20 purse so that he can get that fight. The question is, why does Sergio have such a hard time getting big fights? I believe there are three reasons:

    1. His knockout of Paul Williams was too intimidating, and would kill the career of any future opponent, making Sergio virtually untouchable by the big names

    2. He’s a man without a country. Boxing is a very nationalistic sport, and he is neither Mexican, Filipino, Puerto Rican, or even Cuban. He does not have a country behind him, having lived most of his adult life out of Argentina, his country of birth.

    3. His promoter Lou DiBella doesn’t have the industry “juice” to get these big fights. While I respect Sergio’s loyalty to Lou DiBella, who first plucked Sergio out of boxing obscurity, the fact remains that if he had Golden Boy or Top Rank behind him, he may have been able to be on pay-per-view already.

Sergio Martinez is handsome, deeply involved in worthy causes, and a terrific boxer. I hope he gets these big fights, because as a fan I believe that he’s in the top three in the world, and would put on amazing fights.

  • Sergio Martinez Stops Matthew Macklin in the Eleventh Round

Sergio Martinez stops Matthew Macklin in a fight that pretty much went as most thought, except that Macklin proved that he was a tough hombre. Macklin even dropped Martinez in the seventh round, before being knocked down twice himself in the eleventh round.

Larry Merchant, that old f****r, was very negative about Sergio the entire fight. How does someone as old as him, who’s been around boxing as long as him, still remain so ignorant about boxing technique, particularly defensive boxing technique? He’s impossible to listen to many times. Him and Max Kellerman both need to get punched in the face.

But who’s next for Sergio? At 37 years old, Sergio is at that age where strange things start happening to a fighter’s body, and they slowly but surely start deteriorating. He only has two-three more years left before he will retire. So these are the people I want him to fight.

    1. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (supposedly in talks for September)
    2. Floyd Mayweather
    3. Andre Ward

Sergio Martinez is world-level and Matthew Macklin is not, but Macklin still has a decent future ahead of him. He’s a very likable guy and I hope he gets some more big fights.

  • Sergio Martinez Looks “Marvelous” For His Fight Against Mathew Macklin, Will Start Negotiations with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr Next

Despite reports that Sergio Martinez had lost a step in training camp and was even knocked down, he looks great in his open workout before the Mathew Macklin fight. There seems to be turmoil going on in the Martinez camp, with longtime strength and conditioning coach Cecilio Flores now working with Kelly Pavlik. Sergio has always been renowned for his athleticism and conditioning, which has allowed him to fight with his hands down due to his incredible reflexes.

Since being stripped of his title, Martinez has relentlessly called out current champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Even Jr’s father, the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez, got into a twitter fight with Sergio for his insults to his son. Martinez, this entire time, has been Chavez’s mandatory, but never seems to get his shot. Jose Sulemain has finally said that should Martinez win the Macklin fight, then negotiations between Chavez and Martinez must start next Monday. I will only believe this fight will happen when the two fighters are actually in the ring, facing off. Bob Arum, Chavez Jr’s promoter seems like he would rather die than have this fight happen. And seeing how his other fighter Pacquaio won’t fight Floyd Mayweather, we all know what a stubborn old f*** this guy is.

I’m looking forward to the Martinez/Macklin fight. I, personally, am a huge fan of Martinez’s style, his swagger. He’s beautiful to watch when he’s in top-form with his head movement and unorthodox technique. He also seems to have developed true knockout power late in his career, which is unusual. I think he should convincingly defeat Matthew Macklin and hopefully move on to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, before ending his career with a mega-fight.
