Boxing is all about the superfights, the megafights, the clashing of two superstar fighters. At one time, the top heavyweight fights carried an air of grandeur and excitement that generated mainstream excitement. Now, the mega fights have transitioned to being mainly about the lowerweight fighters.

Case-in-point, Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez is the only fight I can think of in a very long time that will classify as a mega-fight. This means it’s taking the two absolute best fighter, who also command a very strong fanbase, and pits that against each other.

At this point Red Headed Mexican Canelo poses a greater threat to Floyd Mayweather than faded Manny Pacquiao. I’m excited to see this fight. And while Floyd is the heavy favorite, Canelo can make his next step to greatness with a good showing.

Chad Dawson has tumbled down the upper ranks of the championship ranks with his second straight knockout loss, getting brutally stopped in the first round against Adonis Stevenson.

I say good riddance. Chad Dawson is a boring fighter who doesn’t draw any interest. If Adonis Stevenson is capable of producing knockouts like these, then he is a better candidate to be a top fighter.

David Haye needs to face a name, since it looks like his fight with Vitali Klitschko might never happen. On the other hand, Tyson Fury needs to face some real competition, his most impressive win being against Dereck Chisora.

Tyson Fury, despite his loud somewhat unlikeable personality, is a promising prospect. These days, in the heavyweight division, that means he hasn’t been knocked out like David Price. If he’s able to beat David Haye, then he deserves a shot at the Klitschko.

However, I see David Haye figuring out a way to win. He usually does.

Badr Hari fans are still in shock to his humiliating defeat against lowly Zabit Samedov. While the initial shock has worn off, fans are now questioning if Badr Hari threw the fight. While, initially, experts dismissed the claims as nothing more than gossip, signs point to Badr throwing the fight for financial returns.

After the fight he was spotted partying with his girlfriend Estelle Gullit, not acting at all like a man who has just fought a terrible fight. Something has changed about Badr Hari. While I’ve never been a fan, now I’m even less of a one. He appears to have sold his soul to the devil.

Antonio Margarito is making an ill-advised return to boxing. Reportedly, his return isn’t due to his undying love for boxing but to pay for his acrimonious divorce with Michelle Margarito.

Michelle has been a prominent figure in Antonio’s public persona, and probably one of its most positive aspects. She has always come across as serene, loyal, and loving. Antonio even said that when he was a struggling boxer, she said she would work for both of them because it was his dream to be a boxer.

She even stuck by him through the hand wraps fiasco. But even their marriage can’t survive his previous retirement. Reportedly, she is pregnant with another man’s baby, and Antonio already has another girlfriend.

Is this the end of the era of the golden boy? Has hanging out with Estelle Gullit too much made the former bad boy just another sellout?

Badr Hari just lost a fight that he never should’ve lost against the much smaller Zabit Samedov. And he lost in disastrous fashion, getting knocked down in the first round and getting KO’ed in the second. At this point, it appears that Badr Hari would lose badly to all the top kickboxers in the world… and lose badly.

Well it appears that Brandon Rios’ reward for losing to Mike Alavarado is winning the lottery of boxing: facing Manny Pacquiao. This seems like a very cynical marketing decision by Top Rank. They want to put Pacquiao against a fighter who Pacquaio has a good chance of beating, and one who will make a great fight. The fight will happen in November in Macau, China.

Brandon Rios is a brawler, and he will make an exciting fight. He also has a good chin, so he will stick around and make the fight entertaining. However, I also believe that he has very little chance of winning, even against a faded Manny Pacquiao. Win or lose, Brandon Rios will take home a million dollar paycheck, while Pacquaio will have to prove that he’s still relevant.

Marloes Coenen says her first fight against Cyborg Santos was stopped too soon, and that referees stop the fights between women too soon.

She is excited about the rematch and doesn’t believe that Santos is still using steroids. I believe Marloes has a legitimate chance to win this time. Santos has dealt with divorce, public shaming, and the reality that she competed while grossly abusing drugs. This has to take a toll on the fighter. I believe Coenen will defeat Santos, who is no longer taken seriously.

Recently, my kickboxing predictions have been way off. Gokhan Saki beat Daniel Ghita, completely opposite of what I thought would happen. Then veteran Peter Aerts pulls off what I consider the shocking upset by stopping young Jamal Ben Saddik by TKO in the third round.

Peter Aerts, at forty-two years old, has become boxing’s version of Bernard Hopkins. He is a wily veteran who stays in the game, and despite being counted out many times, always makes that surprise come back. Aerts seems like a man who truly loves to fight!

Deontay Wilder has been called the last hope of the American heavyweight division after Seth Mitchell lost badly against Jhonathan Banks.

Deontay has size and an unbeaten record, but so far he’s fought against low-level competition. It’s saying something when Audley Harrison is a major step up in competition. Audley Harrison is a giant man who cowers with comic-book cowardice when hit by an opponent. His apparent horror at being hit makes you wonder why he even became a boxer in the first place.

Predictably, Deontay Wilder was able to stop Harrison in the first round, who simply folded when being hit. Wilder, then caught in the moment, said that he wanted to fight Tyson Fury next. What Deontay Wilder may not realize is that stepping up to fight Tyson Fury after basically getting a gimme win against Audley Harrison is a totally different fight.

Wilder’s win over Audley Harrison means very little, but if he’s able to beat Tyson, then he might become America’s next great heavyweight hope.
