  • Manny Pacquiao Set To Fight Brandon Rios

Well it appears that Brandon Rios’ reward for losing to Mike Alavarado is winning the lottery of boxing: facing Manny Pacquiao. This seems like a very cynical marketing decision by Top Rank. They want to put Pacquiao against a fighter who Pacquaio has a good chance of beating, and one who will make a great fight. The fight will happen in November in Macau, China.

Brandon Rios is a brawler, and he will make an exciting fight. He also has a good chin, so he will stick around and make the fight entertaining. However, I also believe that he has very little chance of winning, even against a faded Manny Pacquiao. Win or lose, Brandon Rios will take home a million dollar paycheck, while Pacquaio will have to prove that he’s still relevant.

  • Deontay Wilder Notches A Victory Over Audley Harrison, But Does It Mean Anything?

Deontay Wilder has been called the last hope of the American heavyweight division after Seth Mitchell lost badly against Jhonathan Banks.

Deontay has size and an unbeaten record, but so far he’s fought against low-level competition. It’s saying something when Audley Harrison is a major step up in competition. Audley Harrison is a giant man who cowers with comic-book cowardice when hit by an opponent. His apparent horror at being hit makes you wonder why he even became a boxer in the first place.

Predictably, Deontay Wilder was able to stop Harrison in the first round, who simply folded when being hit. Wilder, then caught in the moment, said that he wanted to fight Tyson Fury next. What Deontay Wilder may not realize is that stepping up to fight Tyson Fury after basically getting a gimme win against Audley Harrison is a totally different fight.

Wilder’s win over Audley Harrison means very little, but if he’s able to beat Tyson, then he might become America’s next great heavyweight hope.

  • Zab Judah, Consistent In His Inconsistency

I find something endearing about Zab Judah, maybe because he always creates drama and storylines whenever he fights. Or maybe it’s because he’s always on the cusp of being a top fighter, but is always an underdog against the elite fighters. Either way, I always find myself rooting for him.

Zab Judah is consistently inconsistent in the his bouts. He has also turned in some abysmal performances, like practically giving up when facing the surging Amir Khan.

Yet he then is able to make a rousing comeback win against Vernon Paris. But Zab Judah faces a steep test against Danny Garcia. While I’m rooting for Zab, the hype of this contest I believe is going to lead to Zab Judah quitting again. I don’t think Zab can handle Danny Garcia, and unfortunately Angel Garcia has already won the mind-games that happen before the fight. Danny Garcia, unfortunately, will probably be on top for a while, and Zab Judah will not be the one to stop him.

  • Cecilia Braekhus Stops Mia St John In A Fight That Shouldn’t Have Happened

Cecilia Braekhus is a German-based fighter who can lay claim to being the best female boxer of all time. In fact, I believe Holly Holm switched to MMA because she didn’t want to face Cecilia.

Mia St John, on the other hand, is a forty-something fighter who was never that good to begin with. Mia St John is definitely a competitor, and she paved the way for women boxing to receive mainstream attention. But this fight was a horrible mismatch. Maybe Cecilia Braekhus wanted a cream-puff fighter after going toe-to-toe with the scary Anne Sophie-Mathis. Either way, the fight went as everyone thought it would. Video is below:

  • I’m Sorry To Hear That Tyson Fury Knocked Out Steve Cunningham

Tyson Fury just knocked out Philadelphia-based fighter Steve Cunningham in the seventh round. I’m sorry to hear this, because Steve Cunningham is an underdog who I’ve always liked, who always had to fight in enemy territory. Tyson Fury, on the other hand, is just sort of a douchebag.

Fury needs to challenge a Klitschko next. If he wants to be the best, it’s time that he steps up. He needs to challenge Wladimir Klitschko and it would be an interesting matchup. I wish Steve Cunningham the best in the future, and hope he finds success.

  • Is China Going To Become A New Resource For Boxing Talent?

As far as I know, there are no great Chinese boxers. There are a handful of Japanese, Korean, and Filipino boxers who’ve achieved elite status, but not until recently has China started producing their own boxers. This has been fueled by Zou Shiming winning a bronze at the Olympics. His success has caught China’s interest, and they have promised to accelerate boxing’s growth in China. It will be interesting to see if anything will come of this.

  • Gennady Golovkin Knocks Out Nobuhiro Ishida

I’m somewhat sad to report that Gennady Golovkin knocked out Nobuhiro Ishida. While I fully expected Golovkin to win, I’ve always like Ishida since he knocked out James Kirkland in one of the funniest fights in recent memory. Ishida always came across as a tough, respectful fighter, who is somewhat of an oddity in his division due to his heritage and tall height.

Golovkin is definitely on his way up. His issue, however, is that he is too good and not bankable enough for established stars like Sergio Martinez and Floyd Mayweather to take chances with him. However, I would love to see those fights, and would be very excited if they ever did happen (not likely).

  • Wladimir Klitschko Spotted Kissing Hayden Panettiere Again

Wladimir Klitschko was spotted kissing actress Hayden Panettiere again, making worldwide news. Despite the age-difference, and the breakup several years back, the two look like they’ve re-ignited their relationship, at least for now. I still remember how funny I thought it was when they first started dating, seeing Wladimir follow Hayden around the world as she tried to save the whales.

Unlike his brother Vitali, Wladimir seems like a confirmed bachelor, never having married or having children. Vitali, on the other hand, has been married for many years to a woman named Natalie, and has several children.

  • David Tua’s Return Scheduled For August, Does He Have Power Anymore?

Can David Tua even punch hard anymore? After a messy split with his wife, Robina Tua, David is reported to be making a comeback in August. The last version we saw of Tua struggled mightily with Monte Barrett. The same Monte Barrett who was KO’ed by Shane Cameron, a previous victim of Tua’s mighty power.

The rumored opponent is Tony Thompson, who recently upset David Price. In the tumultuous world of prize-fighting, people are actually considering Tony Thompson the favorite in this matchup. While I would love to see David Tua have one last strong run, I believe that he has lost the fearsome power he used to possess.

Still, David Tua will always be one of my favorite fighters, and I will continue to follow his career.

  • Lucian Bute To Face A Tough Test Against Jean Pascal

Well props to Lucian Bute for taking a tough fight against Jean Pascal. This will be his toughest bout since his loss to Carl Froch.

Since then Lucian Bute’s camp must’ve been in rebuilding mode, because for Lucian Bute the way he lost must’ve been a nightmare come true. While Carl Froch continues to take tough fights, matching up next against Mikkel Kessler, Bute has lied low.

Lucian Bute continues to claim that he wants to rematch Carl Froch, and this fight will be a good litmus test for whether the fight should take place. If he’s able to beat Pascal in convincing fashion, he might be ready for a rematch. But if he ekes out a victory (likely) or loses, he would be better off staying away from Froch.

  • About the Author

Hello, I'm the Boxing Blogger. I started watching boxing as a little girl, because of my father telling me stories about Muhammad Ali, who was his hero. I have watched the sweet science ever since, but recently decided to write about it. Thanks for visiting! Please COMMENT, I love hearing from readers!
