Let's Talk Fighting

  • Manny Pacquiao Set To Fight Brandon Rios

Well it appears that Brandon Rios’ reward for losing to Mike Alavarado is winning the lottery of boxing: facing Manny Pacquiao. This seems like a very cynical marketing decision by Top Rank. They want to put Pacquiao against a fighter who Pacquaio has a good chance of beating, and one who will make a great fight. The fight will happen in November in Macau, China.

Brandon Rios is a brawler, and he will make an exciting fight. He also has a good chin, so he will stick around and make the fight entertaining. However, I also believe that he has very little chance of winning, even against a faded Manny Pacquiao. Win or lose, Brandon Rios will take home a million dollar paycheck, while Pacquaio will have to prove that he’s still relevant.

  • Marloes Coenen Will Rematch Cyborg Santos

Marloes Coenen says her first fight against Cyborg Santos was stopped too soon, and that referees stop the fights between women too soon.

She is excited about the rematch and doesn’t believe that Santos is still using steroids. I believe Marloes has a legitimate chance to win this time. Santos has dealt with divorce, public shaming, and the reality that she competed while grossly abusing drugs. This has to take a toll on the fighter. I believe Coenen will defeat Santos, who is no longer taken seriously.

  • Peter Aerts Stops Jamal Ben Saddik, Becomes Kickboxing’s Version of Bernard Hopkins

    Posted on by admin Comment

Recently, my kickboxing predictions have been way off. Gokhan Saki beat Daniel Ghita, completely opposite of what I thought would happen. Then veteran Peter Aerts pulls off what I consider the shocking upset by stopping young Jamal Ben Saddik by TKO in the third round.

Peter Aerts, at forty-two years old, has become boxing’s version of Bernard Hopkins. He is a wily veteran who stays in the game, and despite being counted out many times, always makes that surprise come back. Aerts seems like a man who truly loves to fight!

  • Deontay Wilder Notches A Victory Over Audley Harrison, But Does It Mean Anything?

Deontay Wilder has been called the last hope of the American heavyweight division after Seth Mitchell lost badly against Jhonathan Banks.

Deontay has size and an unbeaten record, but so far he’s fought against low-level competition. It’s saying something when Audley Harrison is a major step up in competition. Audley Harrison is a giant man who cowers with comic-book cowardice when hit by an opponent. His apparent horror at being hit makes you wonder why he even became a boxer in the first place.

Predictably, Deontay Wilder was able to stop Harrison in the first round, who simply folded when being hit. Wilder, then caught in the moment, said that he wanted to fight Tyson Fury next. What Deontay Wilder may not realize is that stepping up to fight Tyson Fury after basically getting a gimme win against Audley Harrison is a totally different fight.

Wilder’s win over Audley Harrison means very little, but if he’s able to beat Tyson, then he might become America’s next great heavyweight hope.

  • Zab Judah, Consistent In His Inconsistency

I find something endearing about Zab Judah, maybe because he always creates drama and storylines whenever he fights. Or maybe it’s because he’s always on the cusp of being a top fighter, but is always an underdog against the elite fighters. Either way, I always find myself rooting for him.

Zab Judah is consistently inconsistent in the his bouts. He has also turned in some abysmal performances, like practically giving up when facing the surging Amir Khan.

Yet he then is able to make a rousing comeback win against Vernon Paris. But Zab Judah faces a steep test against Danny Garcia. While I’m rooting for Zab, the hype of this contest I believe is going to lead to Zab Judah quitting again. I don’t think Zab can handle Danny Garcia, and unfortunately Angel Garcia has already won the mind-games that happen before the fight. Danny Garcia, unfortunately, will probably be on top for a while, and Zab Judah will not be the one to stop him.

  • Cecilia Braekhus Stops Mia St John In A Fight That Shouldn’t Have Happened

Cecilia Braekhus is a German-based fighter who can lay claim to being the best female boxer of all time. In fact, I believe Holly Holm switched to MMA because she didn’t want to face Cecilia.

Mia St John, on the other hand, is a forty-something fighter who was never that good to begin with. Mia St John is definitely a competitor, and she paved the way for women boxing to receive mainstream attention. But this fight was a horrible mismatch. Maybe Cecilia Braekhus wanted a cream-puff fighter after going toe-to-toe with the scary Anne Sophie-Mathis. Either way, the fight went as everyone thought it would. Video is below:

  • How Would Holly Holm Do Against Ronda Rousey?

Holly Holm is arguably the greatest female boxer in the world. Women’s boxing has a very small audience, but in that niche Holly Holm has firmly placed herself as the number one female boxer in the United States. At thirty years of age, she has announced that she is leaving boxing to compete in MMA.

The immediate question is how would Holly Holm do against Ronda Rousey? Holly Holm, like Rousey, is a true athlete who thrives in competition. Cat Zingano, the woman slated to face Rousey next, is a mother of two and a BJJ instructor. Comparatively, Holly’s credentials put Zingano’s to shame. Undoubtedly, Holly has superior striking skills to any female MMA competitor. However, the big question is her ground game and her submissions, which are vitally important if she ever wants to dethrone Ronda Rousey.

However, Ronda has never really faced an opponent with the top-level striking skills that Holly Holm has. It would be a classic grappler vs striker matchup. They are also both blonde, attractive, and American, which means it’s a very marketable fight for the UFC audience.

As of right now, Rousey would probably easily win via armbar, but Holm has showed after rematching Anne Sophie-Mathis, how determined and capable she is against adversity. In a couple years, this could be a competitive and lucrative matchup.

  • I’m Sorry To Hear That Tyson Fury Knocked Out Steve Cunningham

Tyson Fury just knocked out Philadelphia-based fighter Steve Cunningham in the seventh round. I’m sorry to hear this, because Steve Cunningham is an underdog who I’ve always liked, who always had to fight in enemy territory. Tyson Fury, on the other hand, is just sort of a douchebag.

Fury needs to challenge a Klitschko next. If he wants to be the best, it’s time that he steps up. He needs to challenge Wladimir Klitschko and it would be an interesting matchup. I wish Steve Cunningham the best in the future, and hope he finds success.

  • Cat Zingano Upsets The UFC’s Plans for Tate-Rousey II

Dana White was obviously looking forward to promoting Tate-Rousey part deux, going by his reaction after Cat Zingano brutally stopped Miesha Tate in their bout. I had thought that Miesha Tate was going to outclass the lesser-known Zingano, but Cat proved everyone wrong.

Miesha Tate just hasn’t had any luck recently, but I actually am more excited to see Ronda Rousey take on some new blood in Cat Zingano. While Miesha Tate has a lot of heart, I don’t think she has anything more to offer that would nullify Rousey’s armbar. Zingano will offer a fresh match-up, and she’s about to become well-known in the MMA world – by being a coach on The Ultimate Fighter. Congrats Cat Zingano!

  • Gokhan Saki Shocks The World, Knocks Out Daniel Ghita In Cinematic Fashion

I’ve discovered the kickboxing world is a little like Project Runway, “One day you’re in, the next day you’re out.” Less than two years ago, Badr Hari dominated Gokhan Saki, and seemed on the precipice of pugilistic greatness. Gokhan Saki, on the other hand, had never looked worst, and Daniel Ghita seemed to be unstoppable.

Fast-forward to last week, Gokhan Saki knocked out Daniel Ghita in cinematic fashion. I had fully expected Ghita to knock out and control the match against Saki. While it could be argued that Saki got a gift knockdown, but the ultimate outcome is that Saki achieved a huge win, and will next face Semmy Schilt.

I will, once again, predict against Saki, in that Schilt will win. But if somehow Gokhan Saki does pull off the victory, he’ll lay claim to being the best kickboxer in the world. Crazy.

Hello, I'm the Boxing Blogger. I started watching boxing as a little girl, because of my father telling me stories about Muhammad Ali, who was his hero.
